In addition to the Wonders 40 sight words, I also teach the first 90 Dolch sight words with help from parents at home. I start the Dolch word lists in January. The sight words have been put into lists and there are 18 word lists. We finish the 90 Dolch words by the end of the school year. If I have help from parents, the majority of students in my kindergarten class will have many more words under their belt; and this will make them more confident first grade readers. 38 sight words from Wonders are on the Dolch word list. Students can learn an additional 52 sights words.
I introduce 5 words from the Dolch word list on Monday. Parents should work with their child at home nightly reviewing their child's sight word list. On Friday, I assess each student to see if they have acquired the 5 words on the list that they are working on. If the student has learned the new words, they move on to the next word list. If they have not acquired the new sight words, they will remain on the current list that they are working on until they have learned all 5 new words.
